Judging by four days of New York Fashion Week, bold, wide shapes are taking root with designers. Sweaters are oversized, tops are big and boxy, and pants are wide-legged. Volume has been affecting silhouettes for the past year or so, particularly with coats, jackets and vests, and the trend seems to be growing.
Nothing goes better with trying on clothes than a hot pair of shoes and some juicy gossip. So naturally, whenShape was invited to meet with 2006 Olympic figure skating silver medalist Sasha Cohen during her dress fitting before she walks the iconic Red Dress Fashion Show, presented by Macy's andSubway Restaurants, at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, we figured we might be able to get some intel on the U.S. Olympic ice skating team's odds at winning in Sochi.
SHAPE: How did you first get involved with the Go Red For Women/Heart Truth–Red Dress Fashion Show?
It seems just like yesterday when Hollywood’s hottest leading ladies hit the 2013 Grammys red carpet in super scandalous dresses.
And it wouldn’t have been a big deal had CBS not issued a “wardrobe advisory” a week prior to the event.
It was the most glamorous night of the year for the British stars vying for the top prizes at the National TV awards 2014.
And while Ant and Dec, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, and the staff and students of Educating Yorkshire were among the big winners on the night, there were hits and misses on the all important red carpet, as celebrities flashed the flesh, narrowly avoided wardrobe malfunctions and just got it plain wrong on the night.
Raf Simons has always been mesmerized by closed, secret worlds. At his own label, it was the youth tribes who coalesce around certain types of music. Since he started designing womenswear, other doors have opened for him. The beauty parlor/spa scenario of his Spring 2012 collection for Jil Sander was the most obvious expression of his wonderment at the world of women and the closed societies they create for themselves. Then came the job at Dior, and, with it, the opportunity to truly decipher the codes of haute couture and its sorority of female artisans: These are clothes that women make, by hand, for other women.

A red carpet isn’t a red carpet without a look created by the celebrity stylist Kate Young. For Sunday’s Golden Globes, Young traveled to Los Angeles to dress the “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke, who landed on multiple best-dressed lists in a custom embroidered strapless peplum dress by Proenza Schouler. Here, Young recounts her whirlwind weekend.
Friday I arrived in L.A., happy to escape the rainy remnants of the polar vortex. I fit Emilia for both the Globes and the SAG Awards. We went through two racks full of dresses (and countless shoes and bags) before settling on Sunday’s look: a custom Proenza Schouler dress made of a patchwork of black-and-white embroideries. It was so flattering and interesting; it just felt cool. We decided to pair it with black Giuseppe Zanotti sandals with gold safety pins. Afterwards, I met some friends for drinks at the Sunset Tower. All the European designers’ publicists hang out there, because it’s the only place that allows smoking!
Emily Elizabeth Williams and Christopher Michael Miller were married Oct. 19 in an outdoor ceremony at Lambert's Winery in Weston. Pastor Marvin Parli officiated the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Doug and Sandy Williams of Elkins and is the granddaughter of Tom Williams and the late Nina Williams and the late Ernie and Susie Sainato, all of Elkins. She is a graduate of Elkins High School and received her degree in industrial engineering from West Virginia University. She is employed as a business manager at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.
