A red carpet isn’t a red carpet without a look created by the celebrity stylist Kate Young. For Sunday’s Golden Globes, Young traveled to Los Angeles to dress the “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke, who landed on multiple best-dressed lists in a custom embroidered strapless peplum dress by Proenza Schouler. Here, Young recounts her whirlwind weekend.

Friday I arrived in L.A., happy to escape the rainy remnants of the polar vortex. I fit Emilia for both the Globes and the SAG Awards. We went through two racks full of dresses (and countless shoes and bags) before settling on Sunday’s look: a custom Proenza Schouler dress made of a patchwork of black-and-white embroideries. It was so flattering and interesting; it just felt cool. We decided to pair it with black Giuseppe Zanotti sandals with gold safety pins. Afterwards, I met some friends for drinks at the Sunset Tower. All the European designers’ publicists hang out there, because it’s the only place that allows smoking!

Saturday I had a 6:45 a.m. call time for a Vanity Fair photo shoot on Rodeo Drive with all the other red-carpet stylists, and the rest of the day was spent at jewelry appointments for Emilia. At Dior, there was a vitrine with a dollhouse-size model of the salon on the Avenue Montaigne in Paris. I loved the display of rings sitting on tiny chairs.

Sunday I went for a long morning run to mull things over in my mind. When I’m in L.A., I love to run through the flats of Beverly Hills and look at all the houses and gardens. While thinking about the mixture of graphic prints and soft colors and textures at the Chloé pre-fall presentation, I decided to have Emilia carry a pale-pink Baird & Baird bag with her black-and-white dress.

We listened to Metallica while Emilia was getting ready. It came on by accident, and after a good laugh, the whole crew admitted to absolutely loving it! Emilia’s makeup was inspired by a mannequin head from the recent Lanvin presentation, as reinterpreted by the brilliant Jillian Dempsey. Marc Townsend suggested we keep the hair modern and easy and sexy — and he does that better than anyone — so that sounded great to me. When it came time to add jewelry, Emilia was immediately drawn to the Sidney Garber cuffs because they reminded her of some bracelets of her mother’s. Adding gold jewelry instead of diamonds made the dress feel fresh and easy — not so done-up and serious.

After Emilia walked out the door, I went to a bungalow at the Sunset Marquis to meet the stylist Elizabeth Stewart and the publicists Youssef Marquis from Givenchy and Mathilde Meyer from Dior. We had agreed in advance on a dress code of “backup-dress couture,” but sadly, I was the only one who complied. My Givenchy couture gown isn’t pictured (another actress is wearing it to the BAFTA Awards), but watching the awards in it was the next best thing to being there.
