The fashion on the red carpet at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards didn’t follow any one trend, but every actor was sporting sweat stains in the 90-degree afternoon heat. “I feel like Jane Goodall,” said Amy Schumer of the oppressive temperature. “I’m melting…like the Wicked Witch of the West,” she said.

She then gave WWD a shout-out (sort of) when asked about her dress: “Well, one of your writers wrote a snarky item about me so I just tried to follow her advice. Zac Posen designed gowns for my sister and I and we feel like the evil stepsisters.” Well, at least she reads her own press.

This year’s looks proved more interesting in terms of color, pattern and silhouette. Kiernan Shipka chose a yellow embroidered Dior Couture pouf skirt dress over black pants, saying, “These are pieces from Raf’s first couture collection, and I’m quite loving it.” Always pushing the fashion envelope, January Jones chose a dark green strapless Ulyana Sergenko jumpsuit.

“I had seen her couture show and asked for a couple of things, and Elizabeth Stewart came over and helped me. It just felt fresh,” she said. Going in a completely different direction, Zoe Kazan chose a red and white swirled Miu Miu halter gown. “It’s fun to feel like a piece of candy for a day,” she said. “’I’ve been wearing Prada since the beginning of my career and I really admire Mrs. Prada. She’s strong, intelligent and a good businesswoman.”

But it was hard for most people to talk about anything other than the heat, as tissues, fans and even towels were proffered by handlers up and down the Microsoft Theater carpet. “I almost pass out every year from heat exhaustion,” said Sarah Hyland. “I think I’ve lost three pounds in water weight since the beginning of the carpet,” said Allison Janney. “It’s like a waterfall inside this dress.” “The struggle is real, people. I’m sweating hard,” said Laverne Cox, who wore a teal Calvin Klein Collection column. She added, “Francisco himself was at the fittings and I’ve always admired the Calvin Klein aesthetic, so to be embodying it right now feels pretty incredible.”

“Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was more blunt. “I’m just trying to get through this without rivers of sweat running down my crack, to be honest,” he said.

As she blotted her cheeks with a tissue, newbie Rebecca Rittenhouse of “Blood & Oil” took the opportunity to plug her new show. “It’s not New York or Los Angeles, it’s North Dakota, so it’s just a different world. But it has all the elements of a good show – big business, greed, sex, all that fun stuff,” she said. To prepare for all the press, she picked up a few pointers from her co-star Amber Valetta. “She was so helpful, telling me how to put my foot out and stand. She’s a supermodel so of course I’m going to take her advice.”

A few actors had similar moments of awe. Ariel Winter of “Modern Family” stopped mid-interview to gawk at Laura Prepon. “Sorry, this is awkward but I’m freaking out because I love ‘Orange Is the New Black’ so much, I think I’m about to cry,” Winter told her. “Oh, thanks,” replied Prepon. “Should we hug?”

But Carrie Brownstein of “Portlandia” chose not to make physical contact with her girl crush, “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany. Instead, the suit-sporting women exchanged winks and waves from a few feet away. “I love her,” said Brownstein. “We’ve never met before, but we have a Twitter relationship. This is how the Emmys work.”
