After a long day on the bench, I look forward to doing something I enjoy, like performing weddings. It was a big surprise for me to see how seldom people get dressed up for weddings in the courtroom. On one occasion, the couple literally came into the court in the same clothes they had worn while working in the yard that day.
As a teenager I helped my mom with her wedding catering business. At these weddings, everyone dressed up; grooms wore tuxedos and brides were beautiful gowns. Your wedding day is special; be sure to dress up.

I am not sure why so many people are uncomfortable in a courtroom. Is it because it is a courtroom, or it is because they are getting married? I try to put them as ease by telling a few jokes. I refer to their families as the paparazzi, because each family member has to take the same picture.
The joke that gets the most laughs is when a couple overpays and is due some change. I’ll give the money to the groom and as he puts it in his pocket, I ask for it back, hand it to the bride, then look at the groom and say “get used to it.”
When it is time for the vows, everyone becomes serious. Although, some of the things that are said by the bride and groom are hilarious, I would like to share some of them with you:
The groom asked while putting the ring on her finger “Are you retaining water?”
The groom said to me, “Judge, can you hurry up; I have a baseball game to go to.”
After I said, “I pronounce you man and wife,” the groom replied, “cool a tax write off.”
The most charming was a bride that was 92. She told me that it has taken her a long time to find someone that is special enough to marry; he was 88. I asked if she wanted to hold off a little longer to make sure this was the right one. She said “No! Let’s get this show on the road; I don’t have much time.”
It is truly my pleasure to perform these weddings. When you come into my court to be married, please make it special. Get dressed up and be creative. One bride had her dad walk her down the aisle on Skype.
Lesson from the Bench: A wedding in a courtroom is still a wedding; make it special.
